Whiteboard Data Viz: Healthy Hydration

Whiteboard Data Viz: Healthy Hydration

When Lynsey and I woke up Sunday after Thanksgiving, we knew we had to get back on track. Weight gain, indigestion, grogginess and an overall fun-hangover were already sinking in. [Who’s with us?] With Christmas just around the corner, we both wanted to bring awareness back to our daily routine and infuse healthy habits. As a pair of data enthusiasts, we knew just what to do. TRACK OUR CHOICES. Since last Sunday (11/28), we have been tracking our good and bad wellness choices. We wanted to avoid simply calorie counting, so we are also tracking other habits like physical activity, mental stimulation and routine building [ie: yoga, running, reading, hitting the snooze]. How are we keeping tabs on these choices? A google doc lets us track in the moment choices right from our phones. You might remember, we used this method for our Beer Competition.

One more week of data collection remains, but we took a look at some of the results after week 1 and pulled a layer. WATER CONSUMPTION: Lynsey and I agree that drinking water is an important component of staying healthy. We both start the morning with a full glass before coffee…believe it or not! For this Data Viz, we looked at average cups of water per day. I am excited to say that Lynsey was nearly as excited about this visualization as me…it’s working! With her design skills she is taking our visualizations to another level.

This week, we have two bar charts that are represented by mason jars filled with water to average for each of us.You can see that Lynsey drinks on average more glasses of water than me. We also learned that there is no medical community consensus on the quantity of water you should drink each day. Who knew?

So, how much water do you try to drink each day? What are your methods for creating a healthy water drinking habit?
