Make My Mother’s Day Data Viz

Make My Mother’s Day Data Viz

Hey hi! Yes, we know…our Mother’s Day data viz is a little less than- er- timely. But HEY! We got it in before Father’s Day, and doesn’t that just make sense to parents far and wide?A few REALLY exciting things happened between the beginning of our data collection and NOW. We officially moved! We now have a Philadelphia address in the sweetest little neighborhood we could imagine. What’s up, East Falls?! The school year ended! We’re not sure if this…

Data on Daily: Banksy

Data on Daily: Banksy

Lynsey and I have been exploring the Tableau Public Gallery. We hope to start developing a few dashboards based on data we think are fun. Up first, conceptualizing a viz involving data from the National Park Services. In our exploration for inspiration, we came across this viz of Banksy art. The piece by André Oliveira serves as a sort of gallery of Banksy’s art with data that is simplified. If you are wondering how this works, simply select a bubble (or a city). When you select a…

Data on the Daily: Earth Day!

Data on the Daily: Earth Day!

To celebrate Earth Day, we’re sharing this interactive data viz on energy use by state. We stumbled upon this gem on Tableau Public. The visualization uses open data to show the proportion of energy that comes from each major energy source, broken down by state. States are represented by a hexagon. Viewers can change energy source (coal, natural gas, nuclear, renewable, hydro, petroleum) by selecting the timeline for each source. The fill inside the state hexagons represent the proportion of a state’s energy that…

Data on the Daily: Visualization Habit

Data on the Daily: Visualization Habit

This Christmas, Lynsey gave me a grid and guides journal for visual thinkers. Grids & Guides: A Notebook for Visual Thinkers The journal has seven distinct graph paper patterns for visualizing and doodling. I have been struggling with how to utilize it. It’s a great tool for exploring new data compositions, and after watching the first episode of the Netflix series Abstract, I feel inspired to dive into using it. Have you caught this new docu-series yet? One of my…

Whiteboard Data Viz: Snow Day Scenarios

Whiteboard Data Viz: Snow Day Scenarios

It’s only January and we already have a day and a half of “snow days” under our belts. If you live in Delaware, then you already know that this could potentially be just the beginning. We have mixed feelings about snow days in our house. If school, work and everything else in between is cancelled, then SUPER. But our reaction to a school closure depends on a number of other variables. How many snow days do we have behind us at…

Whiteboard Data Viz: Say My Name

Whiteboard Data Viz: Say My Name

As soon as Lynsey thought of the title for this visualization, the family was exposed to an eye opening “Teen Lynsey” lip sync flash back.  As the parents of two kids, we hear the words ‘Mom’,’Dad’,’Mama’,’Dada’,’Daddy’ and every other variation…a lot. There’s only two of them, so we have a solid 1 on 1 situation in our household. Can you imagine how this mom of quadruplets feels?  ↓↓↓↓↓  So this weekend we decided to collect and visualize just how many times…

Whiteboard Data Viz: A Viz in Review 2016

Last year we launched this blog (yep, this one right here) on the heels of closing our brick and mortar modern family boutique.  At first we were all over the place…read more about that here. Over the past year,…
